Re: Got dat new shiny
the motherboard can still detect the drive is there if the cable is slightly plugged in there 48 some pins to a ribbon cable if ones out it will cause problems.
and if it only started happening after you installed new card its most likely the cables, or irq assingment. as with pata ports irq assingment is horrible.

Agreed, also try Microsoft Security Essentials it's free and works great and has a small footprint.SirDumpling wrote:Norton sucks

Stop downloading porn! I haven't had a virus in years. Outside of that advice, I have nothing that will help your current problem that others haven't already said lol

Re: Got dat new shiny
actually norton is rated one of the top scanners for the past 2 year now
avg is horrid
and for overclocking your card will burn out faster if its not properly worked in and yes it would dump out more heat, more power more heat

Yes Heat is the major issue, As lon as you can dissipate that heat, you can overclock it.
Although it is a good idea to let it burn in a few months first, just like a new car, they normally suggest a few thousand Kms before flooring it and such.
And for you question, ATI Catalyst will allow you to Overclock your card's memory and GPU.
And for the Antivirus, Norton is known as one of the best scanners, but it is such a resource hog and once installed, gives you little control on AV Settings. (On/Off and such). It's even a pain in the ass to uninstall.

Re: Got dat new shiny
Your Fan speeds are already set automatically and go by the temperature of the card. Which means at a certain temp it goes higher or lower. So normally you wont need to play around with the fan speed.(You can change the values and have your fan run higher, this might help to get better temps, but it will be louder)
To OC all you do is increment Memory or GPU and then run a stress test on it.
I used "ATI Tools" for stress testing, very good application.
Just to let you know, this will take some time, as you have to slowly increment the values and then stress it for artifacts.

Re: Got dat new shiny
on one of my 4870's i used manual fan because it would run quiet a bit hotter then the others,
what i did was slowly slide the bar higher and higher until it sounded like a jet engine then back it off one so it wouldnt. there will be a certin position when it hits the super sound each one will be different.
and running fan higher will only cause very minimal heat from it nothing to worry about, the voltage increase will be nothing close to what core and mem speed put out.

Nice Mullet.
Sandvich, stop worrying about your GPU temps right now. You said you are in the low 40s C, that's far from too hot. Enjoy the new toy, worry about OC later.

Re: Got dat new shiny
Yeah GPUs run normally hotter than CPUs.
If your running at 40C, that is actually awesome. I've seen 4850s run at 60-70C without a hiccup, they can go at over 100C without any big problems, as long as it's not Idle Temp lol

Re: Got dat new shiny
My old PNY 9800 gets into the mid-70s under load, but it used to get in the low 80s. Still runs fine over 2 years later. Ironically, the fanless 9800 I put in that is also the primary and taking all the GPU load never gets over the low-mid-50s in game. Gotta love massive heatsinks. 40s is fabulous., as we've said. Enjoy the giant framerates.
