Actually you are not supposed + to + and - to - you'll have a higher chance of shorting/sparking out and igniting the oil on the engine block

+ from booster to + dead car and
- from booster car to engine block of dead car

Or read car instruction manual before attempting anything like that

EDIT: Yes don't EVER mix up the colors of the jumper cables and the battery terminals. That will cause a major short like what happened
