Quick Monitor + HDMI Question.
I've always wondered this but never bothered to ask because I get a crystal clear picture on 1080p settings whether I'm using my PC or using the monitor for my Xbox 360.
I'm just wondering if I'm not getting the full potential of my Nvidia GTX 560 Ti and my 23" LCD Samsung Touch of Color monitor (Info) by using a VGA cable instead of HDMI.
Not sure if this is important but I also had to use a VGA converter to actually connect it to my GPU.
Edit: I also have a DVI cable lying around.

Re: Quick Monitor + HDMI Question.
I would think it goes something like vga < dvi < hdmi. But thats just my personal opinion. Most of what matters is how your monitor translates what it gets into picture.
HDMI carries more data.

Re: Quick Monitor + HDMI Question.
HDMI and DVI are both the same as for video Quality (Both are Digital Signals). The Difference is that HDMI can Carry sound as well. (For Example, since the HD4000 Series by ATI, They've added an audio line onto it. Which means you could use an HDMI Cable from the PC to the TV and get Video and Audio all in one)
And VGA is Analog. Since PCs produce Digital signals. A conversion has to occur which can cause some loss or distortion.
In the end, You're better to use DVI or HDMI before using VGA. The difference won't be much. But in the end, It should result in a better quality picture.

Dvi can transmit audio to
What you want to use is dvi for pc and hdmi for consoles

Re: Quick Monitor + HDMI Question.
Thanks for the answers. I switched to the DVI cable I had and I can see a minor difference. Colors definitely seemed to pop out a bit more in Guild Wars 2. I'll just spring for a HDMI cable soon.

Is that a per-monitor thing? Because I use HDMI on my 24" and its well over 30 fps.Stephen wrote:And dont spring for hdmi you will have the same colour pallete but will be capped at 30 fps

Re: Quick Monitor + HDMI Question.
its actual displayable frames, programs will report frames your card is generating not whats actually being displayed to you.
actually as of spec 1.3 i think you can run higher normal is 60 now thanks to the 3d push.
so your monitor and cable and gpu must be 1.3 or higher
either way dvi > hdmi for pc

Just remember NOT to buy HDMI from any irl store. Every single one will fuck you up the ass with pricing. It's 10 bucks for 6 feet of HDMI cable on amazon, and the quality is exactly the same because of digital signal and error correction built into HDMIxxplicitt wrote:Thanks for the answers.
