He currently has an 8800gt. I want to upgrade it, but I don't want to spend more or much more than $100. Like $105 dollars is ok... I'd like to get him something he can play skyrim on, maybe bf3. Thanks for any help.

It looks like there's a sale on 7770. Seems ok, except his mb is pcie 2.0, and that card is 3.0. I assume it's backwards compatible?

They are backwards compatible and if I remember correctly even a 680 can't max out the bandwidth of a single PCI 2.0 slot so you should be good. That was also the exact deal I was going to recommend once I saw your budget of $100. It's not as good as a 6850 or 6870 for gaming, but it should suffice.
