recommendations for wireless routers

Post by ByronTheBulb »

Hey guys,

As some of you may know, I'm back at school rooming with some new people. The current router they have is some linksys wrt router, but it's probably pretty old. They said they found it in a warehouse a few years ago, so it probably wasn't fully functional to begin with. They're constantly playing COD and it just sucks up the bandwidth or disconnects everyone from the network, which I know it shouldn't. Also, I'm about 20 ft away from the router, yet sometimes I get a shitty connection and disconnect on a frequent basis. The shitty disconnection has deterred me from hooking up my xbox to play SSF4 in my room so far, but I'm sick of it.

Oh another thing...I live in double-brick housing. This building used to be a firehouse. Heard it's bad for wireless, but there is only drywall between my comp and the router.

can anyone recommend a good wireless router for me that's particularly decent for gaming? i've found some so far, but they're either 100+ or decently priced, but have a range of reviews from very bad to very good on cnet/newegg.

are any of these good for gaming? i want to convince my roommates to take me to bestbuy so i can buy it today.

I've never used any of those Byron. I have gamed just fine on wireless-N 5GHz on my Linksys E2000 router however. Tends to be a bit more, but that's partly due to having Gigabit ethernet ports (which I wanted for internal network file transfers). Never tried gaming through a brick wall...I know the signal where I often hung out in college had to go through a brick wall or two and it wasn't great. Only 20ish feet away...

As to reviews, pretty much any router with wireless-N has mixed reviews right now. For whatever reason.

ive got this but a step down with single atenna very nice.

lower frequency (mhz) pentrates walls better but tipically run slower.

and if got drywall inbetween you and the router just punch a small hole through by the base board and use an ethernet cable fuck wifi

The e2000 has been fine for me, but like I said, most N routers have mixed reviews right now. The e2000 is at least affordable, the one Stephen linked is pretty expensive. e2000 at $65 with promo code atm is a nice price.

i'm living with 4 new people who are less knowledgeable with internet than me. the router is 3 bedrooms away from me and i'm pretty sure these people won't appreciate a wire running down the hall (i wouldn't want that either since they always hold parties here with people that stumble all over the place) or through the walls...although they did run a wire out the window to get to the downstairs xbox, but that doesn't get in anyone's way.

and stephen, i'm sure other americans know how to patch drywall. i'm rooming with 4 undergrads that don't seem very handy, constantly plays COD, and uses "come at me, bro" in a serious manner. nice people, just not people i usually hang out with.

nope. the router was downstairs before (right next to the xbox in the living room) until i said i kept on getting my connection dropped. they moved it directly upstairs to 1 of my roommate's bedroom and now it's pretty much the same distance from my room to his and his room to the downstairs xbox.

*sigh* last years roommates were really shitty hardcore christians, but at least i had decent internet. now my current roommates are better, but i have very shitty internet.

That's the other one I was looking at at the time Byron. I think I got a better deal on the e2000 in the end, which is why I went that way. But now they're like the same price.

Damnit, the DIR-655 and E2000 both have mixed reviews on multiple xbox connections. E2000 has dual-band options, but I doubt my all my roommates equipment can support 5Ghz.

Might flip a coin for this one.
