New computer

Post by davud »

I'm planning on building a new computer and I want to know if you guys can tell me if it will work out (if the PSU is sufficient for the GPU, no bottlenecks, etc.) Thanks in advance. :-)

NZXT M59 Case
WIN-500XSPX APEVIA 500W JAVA Power Supply-Black
Intel® Core™ i5-750 2.66 GHz 8M L2 Cache LGA1156
Intel LGA1156 Certified CPU Fan & Heatsink
Asus P7P55D LE Intel P55 Chipset DDR3 LGA1156 ATX Mainboard w/ 7.1 HD Audio, GbLAN, USB2.0, SATA-II RAID, 2 Gen2 PCIe X16, 2 PCIe X1 & 3 PCI
4GB (2GBx2) PC1333 DDR3 PC3 10666 Dual Channel Memory
ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCI-E 16X 1GB DDR5 Video Card
500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD
LG 22X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Dual Layer Drive

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-) Oh and also, is the upgrade to a 4890 worth it?

Thank you Stephen, I will put that into consideration. Is there anything about the 4870 vs the 4890? Whether it's worth it or not? (I hear that the difference in performance isn't too significant)

The 4890 is a complete redesign of the RV770 gpu from ATI Named 4890 RV790XT. they were originally gonna release a 4890 built on the older layout like the 4850/4870 series but discovered quite quickly that you couldn't do very much with them unless you had a crazy cooling solution and were very limited by the amount of voltage you could put on them. So they completely rebuilt the core, laying it out for better cooling, better OC'in and alot more power. yet most reviews you do read, power consumption is alot less then the 4870's during no load to mid load on the gpu. when you really crank these cards up to a higher frequency like some which manage to get the gpu's core to 950mhz to past a ghz, makes them insanely crazy!!! yet there are really no games out there to really tax them anyways. Only thing you got to put in mind is the fact, what resolution your playing at (i play all my games at 1920x1080 on a 24" screen) and my 4850 512mb handles most games flawlessly with everything maxxed out!!! Unless its cpu intensive games that are poorly programed (aka crysis) but what ever you play a 4870 or 4890 are about the same price. go with the 4890, you'll gain about 10 - 20 fps over the 4870, on resolutions over 1600x1000 sumthing, if anything lower why even buy them? But apparently the new 5000 series are out on the 22 of this month, 5850's and 5870's so see what the price drops to, because dx 11 is along time away and by the time games start rolling out for them, newer and better cards will be out. But my recommendation is a single 4890 with a solid cooling solution, ( look into the vapour x series from sapphire ) but 4870 or crossfire 4870s is about how low you want to go now!!!since the 4850s are phasing out and would cost the same to crossfire 2 4850's for the performance of a single 4890. But crossfire next month for me, probably 2 5000 series or 2 4890s depending of price. AND MY G19 GONNA BE HERE THIS WEEK HOPEFULLY :D

Thanks for the info, it really helps. So now I'm rethinking it, here's another build. Please let me know what you guys think

CoolerMaster Storm Sniper Mid-Tower Gaming Case
Maximum 120MM Color Case Cooling Fans
Intel® Core™ i7-920 2.66 GHz 8M L3 Cache LGA1366
XtremeGear HP-1216X Five Heatpipes Direct Core Contact Copper Heatsink CPU Cooling Fan (Extreme Silent at 20dBA & Overclock Proof)
MSI X58 Platinum Intel X58 Chipset SLI/CrossFireX Mainboard Triple-Channel DDR3/1600 SATA RAID w/ eSATA,Dual GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394a,&7.1Audio
Corsair Dominator 6GB (2GBx3) DDR3/1600MHz Triple Channel Memory Module
ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB DDR5 PCI-Express Dual DVI-I & TVO
300GB Gaming Western Digital VelociRaptor 10,000RPM SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache WD3000GLFS
LG 22X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Dual Layer Drive
Creative Labs X-FI XtremeGamer 24-BIT PCI Sound Card

Now the few things I have questions about are the heatsink, network and whether I should stick to that mobo up there or should I get the Asus P6T SE Intel X58 Chipset CrossFireX Mainboard Triple-Channel DDR3/1600 SATA RAID w/ eSATA,GbLAN,USB2.0,IEEE1394a,&7.1Audio. I honestly don't know anything about mobos and they seem the same, so what do you think? And Is that heatsink good enough? And my last question is for that build is, would a 750W corsair be too much? Maybe the 650W corsair PSU would be the better choice? And for the network, should I just stick to the onboard network or should I get something else? Thanks in advance again, you guys are really helpful.

well that looks pretty good but one last thing now, whichi im sure ur gonna go with win 7 is do you want the velcioraptor and or ssd. ssd wil last much longer and perform much better but costs abit better.

Also i guess depending on if you wanna wait about a month, the new ATI vid cards should be out any day now and that will mean other cards prices should drop unless you want the new card.

So do I need a network card or will the onboard network on the mobo be good enough? And would a 750W be better than 650W in my case?

I managed to get a Corsair 750W for $120 Canadian. Very reliable.

I have a 500W Thermaltake that's been running pretty well for the year that I've had it.

Corsair makes THE best power supplies in my opinion. I've had 3 of them 650, 800, 1000w and they all were phenomenal. Especially for the price. 52amp 12v rail is unheard of.
