I'm not really into RTS games but I played WoW long enough to understand how excited people are for this.

Now my question is, why is this one so popular and wanted? Is it one of the top RTS games or something?

because starcraft 1 was the benchmark for every single rts game to come. amazing gameplay, great balance, tons of patches.
the fact that it has been pirated roughly > 9000 million times speaks for itself

fuck you allllllllllllll. have to wait another week for my collector's edition to be shipped to my house. and wtf dota 6.68 is coming out this week too. dragoon will not get any sleep at all

I like the Dawn Of War series more then Starcraft, never even played the first so dont really understand the hype. Now this one costs $60 as well, weak.

This one is more about resource/economy management then the newer RTS games that focus on single unit and unit pairing right?

starcraft 1 was really about macro. controlling several bases, controlling the map, etc. really making use of the up to 200 units possible
warcraft 3 was more about micro. controlling each individual unit, making sure they don' die, using all of their abilities, etc

starcraft 2 is a mix of both. there is definitely the macro game, but there are also a lot more abilities than in the first game.

however, for the time being, sc2 is definitely about controlling the economy. lose a couple of workers early on, you'll definitely feel the consequences within the next few minutes.
