They did something like that with SMNC. The game is free-to-play, who needs it gifted, less you just have to get early access, I suppose.

it takes a long time to get the hang of this type of game. it took me months to get the hang of LoL (i was being mentored by roadkill too..) and even after almost 2 years of playing it the transition to dota 2 has been difficult even though they're pretty much the same game. so unless you have a lot of free time and a friend with a lot of free time i suggest spamming practice games, watching streams and looking at guides online (youtube, dotafire, etc)
